¿TJ ■ - '¿atkz / i$ WSsm^ - >iWfc< I^HHP" Aglarond, later and more commonly known as Helms Deep, , is the largest fortress protecting the kingdom of Rohan. Originally built by Gondor to guard the Fords of Isen, the stronghold has two defining aspects; the Hornburg and the Deeping Wall. A long causeway leads up to the main gate of the Hornburg. Looming down on you as you climb the cobbled path is the imposing tower housing the Horn of Helm Hammerhand. Within the Hornburg, and dug into the mountainside, are the armoury and stables. The strategic centre of the fortress, the great hall, is the last line of defence before the Glittering Caves. The Deep, the valley which lays next to the fortress, is barred by the Deeping Wall, built of solid rock, twenty feet thick. Designed to hold back even the most fierce foes, the only weak point is a small culvert allowing water from the Deeping Stream to pass through. Unfortunately, this small vice would prove to be the wall's ultimate undoing.
