It is a great buzz when you’re working on problemsolving a design as a team. Different people will nail specific features in their various concepts. When something special appeared in someone’s artwork everyone was quick to assimilate it into their own concepts to help reinforce the idea. Everyone had different strengths and unique things to offer: Gus Hunter, for example, does an amazing job of bringing ideas together in his illustrations and presenting them to Peter in a cinematic way. Often that was what it took to sell a design. We were part of a bigger team too. Once we finished our work seeding ideas the guys at Weta Digital would take it to a whole new level. 'I here is a limit to what we as conceptual designers can provide because we deal in broad concepts. So much problem solving happens once a design is animated and starts going into shots. Paul Tobin, Weta Workshop Designer In one of my first concepts for the Dragon I had a go at defining the shape of Smaug’s body (page 17, top right). I tried to give his wings an aggressive shape, even when folded: very sharp and pointy. Everything about the design was sharp. Peter reacted quite well to it, but still felt it was a bit similar to what we’d seen before in other films, so I went back and tried to bring out more serpentine qualities (facing page), slimmer and closer to Tolkien’s iconic drawings. Andrew Baker and Jamie Beswarick had laid the groundwork for some very interesting shapes in their concepts. I brought in some of what they had done, including Jamies ribcage design, with the legs that could tuck into the cavity behind it. Peter mentioned the idea of maybe having Smaug’s scales flutter up and down through his body like a ripple effect, which I thought was a cool feature. Таким он должен был быть в фильме(
У виверны только задние ноги и крылья. Не руко-крылья, а крылья, как у курицы.
Голова из Super Sculpey Firm (полимерная глина)
Darvi ROC
